Explore Mauritius This Easter

12:06pm, Tue 13th February, 2018

Although this is not traditionally a period of grand celebration and festivities, Easter is generally a fantastic time to visit Mauritius. As it does not follow the civil calendar, the date of Easter is not fixed: it is the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon. For this reason, Mauritius is uncrowned and Easter tends to become a very family-oriented time. Traditionally, the Friday before Easter Sunday, and the following Monday are public holidays but it is well worth booking a bit of extra holiday to make the most of your time in Mauritius.
Owing to the fact that, although Easter is observed in most countries, the holidays surrounding the festival are very short, not many people take time off work at this point in the year for holidays In these two months, the humidity on the island drops, cyclones become a thing of the past and the sun shines brighter than ever.

Originally the Christian celebration of Easter coincided with pagan spring festivities: in Mauritius this is the end of summer, not the end of winter, but the traditions surrounding Easter remain unchanged, with the giving of chocolate eggs by the Easter Bunny. For Christians, this is the most important time of the church year and it is taken very seriously by Catholics and other denominations on the island. Generally the morning will be spent at church, followed by a family get-together afterwards.
